Social media users should know that there are lots of dangers when they post their I.D.’s and personal documents online. Their privacy may be at risk and may be easy for cybercriminals to do a lot of things. Those I.D.’s and documents could be used for identity theft or fraud.
According to Pew Research Center, 92 percent of teenagers put their real name, 82 percent shows their birth date and 71 percent show their location by providing their city in their profiles online.
A real incident happened to a teacher who became a victim of identity theft that caused him a debt worth Php 800,000.00
According to John Consulta, a reporter of GMA News 24 Oras on Friday, a public school teacher named Mark Joseph Lontok was shocked that he has existing loan amounting to Php 800,000.00 from different banks without knowledge and permission from him. He was being deducted Php 9,000.00 in his monthly salary and an additional Php 10,000.00 will soon be deducted from him every month.
Mr. Lontok found out that his I.D’s and documents were used by a man who pretended tp be him. The man used his fake I.D’s, documents and forged his signature that’s why his loan was approved.
According to Mr. Lontok, the man got his personal details when he posted in Facebook his identification card from Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) right after he passed the Teachers Board Exam.
The National Bureau of Investigation confirmed that aside from Lontok, another public school teacher became a victim wherein the thief used this teacher’s personal information as co-maker in the application of the loan.
So, Atty. Syhian, executive officer, NBI-AFAD not to post in social media you I.D.’s and other personal information about yourself which would be used for identity theft or fraud.
