Japan’s new bullet train connects Tokyo to Hakodate, its northernmost island by high-speed train to the main island of Honshu.
Tickets for the train ride were reservation only and sold out last month in 25 seconds. The train will run through an undersea tunnel called the Seikan Tunnel, the world’s deepest operational mainline rail tunnel in the world and alongside the Channel Tunnel, one of the largest undersea tunnels in the world.
Japanese media reported that over 500 people gathered to see the first Hokkaido Shinkansen leave the station early in the morning.
Media said: a total of 32 trains will be operational to and from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto on Saturday. This project is part of government attempts at boosting regional economy.
By 2030, the Hokkaido Shinkansen is expected to be extended to the island’s main city of Sapporo.
