A nine-year old boy from Barangay Looc, Dumanjog, Cebu became an internet sensation after he was discovered to have 300 teeth.
Johncris Carl Quirante is suffering from hyperdontia, which according to Medicine Net, is an oral condition characterized by having excess number of teeth or having supernumerary teeth. Quirante has 300 teeth, 40 of which were extracted Thursday under a pyogenic granuloma treatment, which is an oral and topical beta-blocker therapy. Seven more operations are needed to extract Quirante’s extra teeth.
Despite of his condition, Quirante, who wanted to become engineer, manages to go to school. He’s currently in his fourth grade. According to his teachers, he even excels in class. Thankfully, Quirante is not bullied in school and has not let the condition affect his daily activities.
While humans having numerous teeth were reported in other parts of the world, notably India, it is one of the rare cases that occurred among Filipinos. Such condition is probably a contributing factor to the attention and popularity Quirante is getting from his countrymen.
Hyperdontia is in between 1 and 4 percent of the population. The ratio between male to female is 2:1. It is believed that genes is one of the factors for the condition.
