The story of a 40-year old mother who married her own son, 23, has gone viral online.
Betty Mbereko, from Mwenezi in Masuingo, Zimbabwe is now six months pregnant and expecting her son's child, and her grandchild. She has been a widow for the past 12 years and has been living with her 23-year old son Farai Mbereko. Betty decided to marry her son rather one of her late husband's brothers, whom she says are covering her.
Betty stunned a village court last week when she said the affair with her son had begun three years earlier. She was changed in a village court with incest.
Betty insisted in the proceedings that she had to be in union with her son in marriage because she paid for his education and she doesn't want anyone else to benefit from his salary.
"Let me enjoy the products of my sweat" She told the village court council."
Farai said he was excited to marry his mother . He even vowed to pay for the debt of his late father.
Local head man Nathan Muputirwa say: We cannot allow this to happen in our village, this is a bad omen indeed. In the past, they would have to be killed but today we cannot do it because we are a afraid of the police."
He warned them to immediately break off their marriage or leave his village. They chose the latter and have since left the village for an unknown destination.
