Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said on Saturday that he was going to run for the country's top position in the 2016 presidential race.
“Give me any Filipino – a poor man, a teacher, a lawyer or a doctor. Basta not someone whose citizenship is presumptive,” - DuterteHe told the supporters and schoolmates from San Beda College of Law in a birthday party of SBC Law classmates Atty. Fred Lim, at the Orchard Golf Course in Dasmarinas, Cavite, that he is going to run for president with Senator Peter Cayetano as his running mate.
His running for presidency was after the Senate Electoral Tribunal's(SET's) decision to dismiss the disqualification case against Sen. Grace Poe filed by Rigalito David. Duterte was disappointed with the SET's decision favoring Sen. Grace Poe who was declared a natural-born Filipino citizen.
"What made me decide to run? Was it an offer for money? No. Gusto ko lang sabihin sa lahat stop (expletive) with the Philippines. Nothing against Grace but if you run for the highest post in the land, it must be reserved for a true-blue Filipino,'' Duterte said.
According to Duterte, he decided to run not for money, but for a principle that if you run for the highest position in the country, it must be reserved for a true-blue Filipino. Duterte challenged Poe that he will step down if Poe can prove that she is a truly Filipino.
